Turn on your webcam. Allow access to your microphone. The experiment begins.

You have become the first subject in the final phase of the Null Institute Protocol Zero trials. The goal is to objectively measure the limits of human self-control. The reward is first. The method is full monitoring. Your task is to complete four stages, adhering to absolute rules. Your body is the primary variable in this equation.

    Full tracking system

This experience is only possible with an active webcam and microphone. The game analyzes the video stream and audio from your devices in real time. The mechanics are built not on button presses, but on physical inactivity, precise movements, and absolute concentration. The system records blinking, lip movements, silhouette movements, and hand trajectories. Any violation is a critical failure and results in immediate termination of the experiment.

    You are Subject Zero.

You have signed a contract with a foundation renowned for its neurological research. You are the first and key participant. Your codename is Protocol Zero. You are not given the ability to know what came before or what will come after. As the trials progress, through voice instructions and snippets of data, the true scope of the study will be revealed to you, where the subject's resilience is just one of many measurable parameters.

Go through four phases, each testing different aspects of your control. Breaking any rule ends the session.

    Stage 1

The system monitors your blink rate by analyzing the camera image. Your task is to not blink for a set period of time. The sensors will detect any eyelid movement. A tear rolling down your cheek is also considered a violation.

    Stage 2

You must maintain a completely still posture and remain silent. Software analysis will compare your silhouette with the original position and record any shifts. The microphone will record any sound above the background level, including breathing and random noises.

    Stage 3

A sequence of gestures will be briefly displayed on the screen. You must reproduce it precisely, in the correct order, and within a limited time. Computer vision will compare the trajectory and position of your hand with the reference model. A mismatch will result in a crash.

    Stage 4

You will be given a command to move or freeze depending on the signal (green or red light). The system continues to monitor your immobility through the camera during the "red light" phase. An incorrect response to the signal or movement during the prohibited phase will be considered a failure.

    About the Game

In UMBRA, you awaken from cryo sleep aboard a drifting spacecraft after a sudden and complete system failure. Emergency power is unstable, large parts of the ship are without light, and the corridors are in disarray. As you step out of your cryo pod, it becomes clear that you are not alone.

Your objective is to move through the ship’s interior, progress from the first sector into a second connected area, and survive long enough to reach the end of the accessible vessel. You cannot fight the hostile entities that roam the darkness, and survival depends entirely on how you move and manage your limited resources.

    Gameplay

UMBRA is a top-down 3D survival horror experience built around tension, repetition, and learning through failure. The game is structured across two interconnected ship sectors made up of narrow, maze-like corridors and technical rooms.

You begin with a flashlight as your only tool. In addition, you can collect flares, which can be deployed to create temporary light sources that increase your chances of passing hostile entities safely.

Enemies react to illumination and movement, forcing you to carefully decide when to use light and when to conserve it. You can move through the ship in darkness, but visibility becomes severely restricted, increasing the risk of running into enemies or losing orientation.

If you are caught by a hostile entity, you die and restart from the last checkpoint. Progression is based on repeated attempts, learning enemy behavior, and refining your movement through the environment.

Navigation is handled through a real-time map system. The game does not pause while the map is open, meaning you remain vulnerable while planning your next movement. Progress between areas is achieved by navigating corridors, surviving encounters, and interacting with doors that open access to new sections of the ship.

As you make progress, the game gets more challenging. The battery power of your flashlight gets limited, so you have to find battery pickups throughout the ship that allow you to keep it operational for longer periods.

The game displays your time spent on the walkthrough, making it easily accessible for speedrunning.

    Disclaimer

UMBRA is designed as a short, self-contained experience. Currently, no further work is being done on UMBRA.
